Pre-Purchase Full Survey

Buying a boat is exciting, but it’s important to know exactly what you’re investing in.

A comprehensive assessment of the vessel including: the hull, deck and superstructure; mechanics and propulsion; operational systems; electrical and electronics; plumbing; rigging and sails; interior fit-out; tender and safety equipment.

Ideally this includes an in and out of water inspection and sea trial.

This thorough survey ensures the vessel meets expectations, and identifies potentially hidden major and minor defects—information that can be invaluable when negotiating the final purchase price.

Insurance survey.jpg

Insurance Risk Survey and Valuation

Providing confidence in your vessel’s value, safety and seaworthiness.

Whether you are applying for a new policy or renewing an existing one, our professional insurance report and valuation is designed to satisfy insurers, finance companies, buyers, and brokers alike.

The report helps you determine the appropriate level of insurance coverage and highlights repair and maintenance issues that should be addressed before they develop into costly problems.

Valuation Survey

There are plenty of reasons you may need to know the value of your boat.

If you’re buying or selling, importing, exporting, financing, insuring or going through a settlement or legal dispute, our extensive, unbiased valuation report based on the “fair market value” system ensures you and other parties know the true value of your vessel in today’s market.

Condition Snapshot Survey

Get an idea of a vessel’s condition without the expense of a full survey.

This helps you decide whether to even make an offer—knowing a full survey can be done later. Relying solely on information from the seller or broker can waste your time and money.

When inspecting a vessel, having an expert with you can help identify any issues you might overlook. If you are interstate, overseas, or simply too busy, and want to know if a vessel is worth you inspecting in person, I can provide a brief report or conduct a live video walk through.

Sea trial

It’s impossible to know how well (or badly) a boat works without a sea trial.

A sea trial is highly recommended to be included in your pre-purchase full survey.

However, sometimes you might not need a survey, you just want an unbiased professional to accompany you on a sea trial of a boat you’re interested in. If you want that person to be someone with decades of experience handling sail and motor yachts of all shapes and sizes all over the word, I can help.

Scope of Survey

Every vessel and every survey is different, so let’s chat about what you need.

We’ll agree on the Scope of the Survey before I start work, because it’s important for both parties to be clear on the purpose of the survey, and to understand what will and won’t be covered in the report.

About Condor Marine

Ian “Condor” Smith is an accredited Marine Surveyor with a lifetime of hands-on boating experience. An accomplished sailor and engineer, he has crossed the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, as well as the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Coral and Tasman Seas multiple times.

Condor has won major yacht races both here and overseas and completed countless sailing and motor yacht deliveries worldwide.

He was Operations Manager for Sunsail on Hamilton Island and skippered charter yachts in the Whitsundays, then spent several years cruising the remote islands of the Pacific on his own yacht.

Roles as Captain, First Mate and Engineer on superyachts and classic timber yachts in the Mediterranean and Caribbean further refined his engineering and operational expertise.

Since settling on the Sunshine Coast in 2012 Condor has specialised in commissioning imported yachts, installing systems, overseeing modifications, local and international deliveries and training boat owners in vessel operation, maintenance and passage-making preparation.

As a certified yacht surveyor, he brings deep insight, experience and a passion to help others pursue a life afloat.

Testimonials

Read what our satisfied customers have to say...

Condor recently conducted a full survey of our vessel ‘Hades’. His in depth knowledge of marine systems, regulations, construction and maintenance is truly impressive. The inspection was meticulous, finding issues that we had not noticed before.

What sets Condor apart, is not just his ability to identify faults, but also his practical, solution-focused approach. Instead of simply pointing out issues, he offered clear, actionable recommendations that were both realistic and cost-effective.

Jules McDonald

Co-Owner Hades

I highly recommend Condor Marine. They did a fantastic job on the risk survey and valuation done for my insurance recently. He discovered a few problems I didn’t know about and recommended some repairs and maintenance I needed to do. He was willing to come back and change his initial report once I had the issues fixed, which definitely saved me money on my policy.

I reckon my boat is more seaworthy and will probably run smoother and last longer thanks to Condor’s keen eye and good advice.

Brett Anderson

Owner, Blue Horizon

I first met Condor when he did the sea trial on our brand-new cruising catamaran years ago. To say we knew nothing back then is an understatement, but Condor’s knowledge, support and encouragement got us going.

Now, tens of thousands of sea miles later, he continues to be a great source of boating knowledge and advice. He helped us prepare our boat (and ourselves) for seafaring, and to eventually cross oceans. To this day, I still call to seek advice and share a beer every now and then. Thanks Condor!

Tim Armstrong

Beachspace Marine

I highly recommend Condor for thorough yacht surveys having used him for several fibreglass boats and a timber boat.

He has sound knowledge on engines, electronics, rigging, joinery and everything in between. He finds faults that others would overlook. He's very friendly and gives great advice.

Unlike some in the marine industry, Condor has many years of practical experience sailing and living on different boats. He also has great tips for the best anchoring, fishing, diving and surfing spots up and down the east coast of Australia and all over the Pacific too! I wouldn't do an ocean crossing without his prior inspection.
